we just ordered a 31x16 foot shelter-systems pvc dome...it's going to be the new home for the black rock boutique this year. i know they get really hot due to the pvc cover, so we are thinking we should cover it with some aluminet. We also want the boutique to have a cool looking cover, so our thought is the sew some patches of colored shade cloth in with the aluminet- to give it a circus tent like appearence...
we don't have the dome yet, but we need to order the shade cloth soon so it shows up on time...i've talked to shelter-systems, and they couldn't give me a really good answer on exactly what size the cover should be---anybody every cover a 31x16 shelter-system dome, or have any idea what a good size would be (we're thinking have the cover stop about five feet off the ground)...also, has anyone cut aluminet into a circle to fit perfectly over a dome, or sewed shade fabrics together?

Re: more dome covering questions
Thu, August 3, 2006 - 12:43 PMYou can use shade cloth from Home Depo. Do not use tarps they can trap heat and melt your poles.
Other items that you should consider taking to add to your shelter that you can get at Home Depo or your building supply store:
Tarp or Tarps large enough to cover the ground inside the dome used rugs are handy also
Longer Stakes incase the ground is loose, rebar.
Strong Bungee Cords if you decide to set guy lines.
Duct Tape. Always handy.
Large Tupper Wear Plastic Box to seal away cloths and other items away from the dust.

Re: more dome covering questions
Thu, August 3, 2006 - 8:37 PMEspressoCamp's "dome" is Aluminet. The pieces are gore shaped, like from the peel of an orange. Cut the pieces with about 6" overlap. Use a 2" wide strip cut from silver vinyl tarp. Wrap the shade cloth around the vinyl, then overlay above and below vinyl strips so you have a vinyl - 2x aluminet - vinyl - 2x aluminet - vinyl sandwich. This traps the loose ends ov aluminet, mostly for looks. You can skip the center vinyl, but use the outer 2 layers. The main reason is to keep fhe openings in the aluminet from snagging in the sewing machine. Clip the pieces together with bulldog paper clips. Use the zig zag stitch, about 3 - 4 passes. Once you get going you can literally floor the sewing machine. You will need about 1 - 2 miles of thread for a big dome. Our 15 ft has about 4000 ft of thread.

Re: more dome covering questions
Fri, August 4, 2006 - 6:54 AMSpeaking of covers, I'm wondering what everyone thinks of Aluminet. I saw a huge piece at the Dreamtime festival. It appeared to be fairly strong, able to handle high winds and dust, and relatively lightweight. But it didn't offer much shade protection. There wasn't a big difference between being under the Aluminet and being out in the sun. It also looks like it may be difficult to cut and sew. I like your idea of a vinyl sandwich. -

Re: more dome covering questions
Fri, August 4, 2006 - 8:22 AMThat shade aspect has alot to do with what level of aluminet it was
ie: was it 30%? or 70%?
you can get all the way up to 80 or 90 I think? -

Re: more dome covering questions
Fri, August 4, 2006 - 2:55 PMEspressoCamp dome is 70% shade. We bought a piece that was I think 32 ft wide, but anyway it was seamed down the middle by the factory using a serger/overlock stitch, but they probably had a special machine.
We also overwrapped the edges with a 4 ply, "W" shaped vinyl tarp fabric, then grommeted thru it all. It held up fine to last years windstorm. We heard reports 50 -60 -70mph, but who knows what it really was....total whiteout
