Re: Domes for 2005
Mon, March 28, 2005 - 10:15 PMMy camp is going to make a big dome this year called the Head Games Dome. We'll be making some "doors" in it, laying down a foam floor, and filling the inside with games and art. Not too out of the ordinary, dome wise, but we're going to assemble it top down, lifting it one rank at a time and setting it on stands while we build the next rank. Toward the end we'll need a bit of muscle for the last couple of lifts, but the one thing there is plenty of at Burning Man is people willing to lend a few minutes of help. :-)
Building it top down means we don't need a big ladder, nor a cherry-picker. I watched a camp build a big dome using a cherry picker. They hung the dome from it and built it top down.

Re: Domes for 2005
Mon, April 4, 2005 - 12:43 PMWe built ours top down last year. I made a dual boom crane on the inside. We were going to take the crane out after the dome was done but before that happened someone put a hammock on it and it stayed inside the whole week.
We needed the crane, the dome weighed over 1000lbs.

Re: Domes for 2005
Thu, April 7, 2005 - 6:59 PMI’m working on a 30x20 foot elliptical dome for 2005.
It will be shaped like a human brain. One side will be painted with mathematical formulas and numerical equations. The other side will be painted “creatively” (not sure yet).
The dome will be either a 5 or 6 frequency octahedral design.
With the high cost of EMT and that I have a stock pile of 1” PVC, I’ll being building it out of PVC.
Into the ends of the PVC struts I’ll insert 6” pieces of 3/4” steel conduit that will be pressed flat and bent for the joints.
The PVC will be strong enough but just for fun I may add a space frame to the inside more for looks than anything.
It will also have a tower that will come out of the dome. The tower will be 5’ taller than the dome giving a observation deck at 20’ above ground. I’m a bit worried about the tower; the dome will not support it so there will be four columns inside the dome to support it.
They will be used for a loft and a swing chair on the inside.
I may need to put guy wires on the top of the tower (not sure yet).
I’ve got the strut lengths worked out for the 5V version, I want to work out the lengths for the 6V and see if it is worth the extra row.
I’ll post a picture after I figure out what frequency it is going to be.

Re: Domes for 2005
Wed, June 15, 2005 - 12:13 AMI've built 7' radius 3v dome last year out of steel conduit. Check my web site: www.dragishak.com/dome/dome.html
I have a small Excel spreadsheet that can help calculation.

Re: Domes for 2005
Thu, June 23, 2005 - 6:55 PMWe're going to try to build D2 this year. D1 was (mostly) recycled. Finding bamboo was a challenge; now we're just trying to find MONEY...just like everyone else...
