Just curious what people have done here in regards to geodesic, what their level of interest is, and where they want to see the art and science of it go in the future? Just an open ended question.

Re: What's everybody here for?
Thu, February 5, 2004 - 11:55 AMMy Companion is obsessed about Bucky spheres to live in. So I'm trying to get a better idea about what they're all about, and how feasible the idea is. Are there any noises about people building them to dwell in? Or is the whole idea still on paper?
I'm a Social Scientist, not a Mathemagician, so be gentle.

Re: What's everybody here for?
Fri, February 6, 2004 - 2:28 AMFor those who are into it, Hugh Kenner's seminal "Geodesic Math and How To Use It" is back in print for a reasonable price, vs. the $300 the pirates on amazon were asking.
On topic:
I'm currently investigating the potential of a semisubterranian geodesic sphere (not dome, but complete sphere).
Well, that, and all the models one ends up building to understand the stuff makes for great decor. :-) -

Re: What's everybody here for?
Mon, August 29, 2005 - 1:49 AMAmen to the model building leading to crappy decor, and great understandings. Funny. Jeremy, what about creating a sub-terranean quasi-geodesic egg, where making the larger bottom, hold the mass, of the tapered top, and lots o' dirt. Full spheres tend to egg out, given time, so why not make full eggs, instead of spheres? It'll be like when they cure pre-stressed I beams in buildings, by cooling the ends faster, except, one can make an egg, with math and machinery.....

Re: What's everybody here for?
Mon, August 29, 2005 - 9:16 AMA friend has gotten into making geodesic domes, both models and full size, so I wanted a way to get helpful tips from time to time. I'm interested in them, but don't have any great designs for any yet. Hopefully in the future.

Re: What's everybody here for?
Sat, December 31, 2005 - 2:46 PMI want to build a big dome to have as community living space. A future project for me would be to hook up with a group of likeminded souls to partner on a business venture in dome building. Have you seen the design of the domes made by Temcor? They use aluminum extrusions for struts.....kind of like modified I-beams......and the connectors are special aluminum discs. The result is a structure that is a bunch of flat triangular planes that provide a surface to attach a triangular panel (glass, aluminum, or solar) that is sealed around the edges with an integral silicone seal. My thought is to simplify that design, build a prototype, work out the bugs, and then start doing production runs. It will take a team to do it all......and the result will be domes that last for hundreds of years. I'm thinking that making something like this happen would be a good use of my time. Interested?
Brightest blessings, Stove

Re: What's everybody here for?
Wed, January 25, 2006 - 12:34 AMAt Burning Man, friends and I have a couple of 23 ft domes for shelter for the weeklong event.
I just like checking to see if there are easier and better notions of construction that people might have.

Re: What's everybody here for?
Wed, January 25, 2006 - 9:50 PM--Built a half-scale Pacific dome from Domebook, ages ago. Used it to cover a hot tub; worked pretty good. Just keeping current via this group. Maybe some day, something portable for Burning Man chill space would be kewl.

Re: What's everybody here for?
Sat, January 28, 2006 - 6:03 PMnewbie here - - - long time bucky buddy - in early 1970's was principal builder in "barnraising" a 42' diameter 4 frequency dome in Franklin ME. It was a wonderfully challenging project. I may scan one of my favorite pictures of the event to share on this tribe. in general - interest in structure, design and construction - especially green / sustainable. -

Sat, January 28, 2006 - 10:25 PMWelcome
I would love to see that pic.

Fri, April 20, 2007 - 9:15 AMwell - finally - - not scanned.
I'll be posting two digi pix of an old analog here shortly.
vote on the one you like best - - - I'll delete the other :-]

Re: What's everybody here for?
Sun, January 29, 2006 - 12:27 PMI came here to get tips on building a dome. I built it in 2004. Now I just lurk.
I documented the proces: www.dragishak.com/dome/dome.html -

Re: What's everybody here for?
Mon, January 30, 2006 - 1:45 PMThat is some pretty good documentation. I'm wondering why you made a 3V dome you could have made a 2V that size in less time with less materials. -
-
Re: What's everybody here for?
Tue, January 31, 2006 - 12:27 PM3V looks better. I would have made 4v but then I'd have problems making a door.
-
-
Re: What's everybody here for?
Wed, February 1, 2006 - 3:30 PMthe door would have been the least of your problems if it were 4V.
more wieght (unless lighter strut material)
much more time
more materials
increased issues with vertex dimpleing
aesthetics wouldn't justify that
3V was a much better choice -

Re: What's everybody here for?
Mon, July 31, 2006 - 12:41 AM3v is the first nucleated planar triangulation, and I just chose it for a 3v non-geodesic octahedron. I do like 4v though. Clean hemispheres are nice, and odd frequencies just don't cut it some times. I haven't checked the documentation yet, but I'd like to do it before I hit the hay. This open ended thread was a good way to get the ball rolling here. Indeed! -

Re: What's everybody here for?
Wed, April 25, 2007 - 5:18 PMI've made several 3v icosahedran 5/8. One of them is big enough to use as a wet sauna. Come visit over at Steam Bath Project Tribe. My interest in geodesic is general, but I have a specific interest in temporary permaculture -

Re: What's everybody here for?
Sat, May 5, 2007 - 5:34 PMI just like geodesic domes and am tired of the compulsion to have 90 degree angles in every structure. Get over it, West.
I'm interested in incorporating weather controlled enviroments in a series of interconnected domes for life with limited water and a parching sunshine...
(think I can raise some venture capital for this project? )
No really, I just like domes and people wholike domes... and plan to read some of buckminsters lectures soon/.
