I'm building a 24' 3v dome for the co-op system here in Isla Vista, by the end of the summer. It was my solution to 100 5' pieces of 3/4 I must have had for this purpose. It's 100 of 165 members, so I figured a couple hundo to give them a dome, use my materials, and work a little more Dharma wouldn't be half bad. I thought I knew a company in town here, who could crimp pipe, because I asked a foreman @ a construction site, who was using the same method for a wood/EMT truss, but the company didn't know what I was talking about when I called. I'm looking for someone who can save me the hand work, if I drive my cut pipes down to them. I grew up in Orange Co., so I can drive past LA, but I think I'll pass, at least, 20 setups to crimp pipe, by the time I get there. Anyone between SB and LA have a crimp setup that I can use for a couple hours, knowing that the project is "not for profit", and will serve ungrateful college students for several years. They don't know what they're missin' until they've got one. Sure, we have fun catalyzing all within our reach. Got crimping tech for reasonable trade or a fair price? Drop me a line personally and here (put yourself on the public map too) and lemmeno if you can help. Best Wishes, and Be Well!

Re: Anyone have a crimper or fly-wheel press from Santa Barbara through LA?
Mon, July 31, 2006 - 1:23 AMAlso, I'm submitting an art grant for a festival in San Bernardino September 1st, 2nd, and 3rd (arrive on 1st, install before festival on 2nd, sleep, lounge, and take em' down on the 3rd. It's not a dome thing, but I'm proposing 3 3-frequency planar octahedra, as one mega shade structure, with a triangular footprint of 46' on a side, and a height just under 19'. It's a new type of design I prototyped last summer, and now I'm doubling my compressional member lengths, to get 8X's the volume, from each structure. Install with this method is the easiest volume/time/energy I've seen in action yet. The real work is building the thing in a big park first. I'd give more details, but I've got to file a patent before the festival, after that I can share all I want. This is the second structure project I'm taking on this August, but the purpose of this post was to find a fly-wheel press or jigged bottle jack for crimping pipes on the dome project. If you live in SoCal and you'd like to go to Nocturnal Wonderland with a project to help work on, let me know, and we might work something out. Options are open. They always are.

Re: Anyone have a crimper or fly-wheel press from Santa Barbara through LA?
Mon, July 31, 2006 - 10:57 AM--FWIW we found that an ironworker with a punch station works really well for this. Just put in a punch and set depth to mash and not punch thru; replacing die with an anvil. Not sure if you want to use a flypress because the action is so damn fast and scary. With an ironworker, while the mashing is at the bottom of the stroke you can do tweaking as needed to the free end to get the tangs bent right in the middle of the tube. -

Tue, August 8, 2006 - 1:07 PMAwesome! I saw that you were in SF, but I guess you've got had some coverage in Santa Barbara as well. I lived in the Bay and found way too many distractions for where I was @, but SB's offered some serenity of living in a town as opposed to a city. The next time I want to spend in The Bay is either going to be $$$$$$ oriented or for partying. This town doesn't offer a whole lot of either (as to what I know is possible), and that's just fine for stickin' to one's focii. Thank You Very Muh!
