how much would the materials cost if I'm cutting the pipes, drilling the holes and flattening the ends myself?
I believe that I can at least have the top half made of aluminum.

Wed, June 13, 2007 - 8:53 PMIf you've got the dough, Triodetic has your soft aluminum solution if you're concerned with mass. They've got an extruded hub with the right number of slots (4, 5, 6, 8, whatever) but to the length for fitting in extruded Alcoa T7 aluminum struts into them. The hubs are stronger than the struts, so as long as you're not applying enough force to shear the middle of a strut, you will never break a hub. Each hub is even threaded to be a U-joint for putting up stuff in tension. Also, they have made mostly lamella domes which are generally rings in increasing or decreasing equilateral triangles. Ideally, one can use this method with a crew of 5 different languages (important when building a dome for a Mosque)because it's mostly concentric rings of different sized 60* triangles. Any way, take a look at the picture I'm putting up as the "main". That's one type of design they can do. Just my spin on "low mass" domes that are rock solid if you've got the $$. Ask them for a quote. -

Wed, June 13, 2007 - 9:02 PMOtherwise, your length is mostly a function of length, hold on.... A 20' full sphere has 698.7402' of point-point struts. From 700' of EMT conduit if that's they way you want to go, I'd smudge the numbers just enough to work backwards from 700 feet of pipe. I'll crunch the numbers if you'd like to work most efficiently using 7 bundles of EMT if you'd like. I usually know the size of the dome last, as I try to let material stock and dome frequency drive the least amount of waste for the space. It'll be ~19.5 or something, but I can send a recipe on your reply. Hugs and Peaces. -

Wed, June 20, 2007 - 3:06 AMOK, the size a 2v geodesic sphere WANTS to be, from 10' human materials (1" EMT minimum suggested) is a bit smaller than a 20' diameter. The best I could get away with would actually be from 600' of EMT with a 16.746' (16' 9") diameter. The cut should be made 68.588" from one side or 54.912" from the other side of the 10' sticks. That means that from 60 sticks, you should be able to make 6 well measured cuts with a 14" chop saw on 10-packs of tubings, and get 120 perfectly sized units (accounting hub/bolt hole centered @ 3/4" from the end of each piece). If you can happen to get a slightly heavier pipe (diameter or wall thickness), 12' sections would give you a diameter of 20.1" or so (ask me for new numbers as it's not just a scalar, but a scalar and constant to make it just right), but unless you want to use 25% more pieces of pipe, you're stuck with a diameter of 16'9" for scrapless materials fabrication. It's not me, it's what the dome wants. A 16.746' diameter domes offers only dust scraps and metal shards for the saw table to blow off of itself. That's what I meant by knowing my size as the very last thing about a dome, as I let my material lengths dictate that. I once designed a ~54' diameter 7-frequency that would have used 97% of it's materials, leaving only a small bucket of scraps from 700 individual pieces (that sort of thing's almost worth a few hours of MADNESS).
