Have you ever seen a building or bridge, with scaffolding erected around it, and covered in white plastic? That material is called shrink wrap and is sold by Hippwrap in San Diego. It comes in big sheets, is very tough, is very affordable, and is very easy to work with. It is guaranteed to last for 6 months in the sun and regularly lasts 8 -12 months. Definately buy the 12 mil thick stuff. Seams are created by bonding, a process where you heat the overlapping seams with a torch, press them together, and they stick....then you apply a very special proprietary tape, also sold by Hippwrap, that sticks so well you can barely remove it, to make the seams water and dust-proof. The bonding goes very quickly.....much faster than sewing or gluing......and is fairly easy to learn how to get good results. The reflective, white material keeps the temperature down inside during the day. The material is highly flame-retardant, as well.

I created 2 dome covers (30ft. 3V, and 10.5ft. 2V) with this material for Burningman 2005 and my only complaint is the limited UV resistance. It is possible to shrink the cover, once installed, and that would make it tight as a drum, no kidding, but I chose not to shrink it beyond the shrinkage that occured by bonding the seams.......so that the cover would be removable and reinstallable.

Tribe me if you have any questions. You can find Hippwrap on the internet. They are great people and will provide you with this amazing product for a fair price.

Love, Steve

    YES!

i live in indiana - and the northern part of indiana makes a shit-ton of trailers - campers - custom conversion vans - boats etc . . . .

ever see a trailer full of new boats on the highway?
they all are shrinkwrapped to protects em (there all fiberglass) -
its like 10 mil cellophane about 6 or 8 feet wide thats wrapped around it offa big spool like saran wrap and then heated to shrink tight - air and watertight -

      the downside is . . . .
they are made out of poison
the reason they "shrink" is that they give up a molecule of some heat discharged chemical - that is who-the-fuck-knows-what . . .
patented by dow or dupont one one of the other molecule merchants that claims to actually own patents on YOUR DNA!
      (but i digress . . . . )
there are endless arrays of vinyl compounds - and poly-butyl-what-the-fucks out there that seem like they are ideal to sustain us in a lighter fashion then ever before - they are ''almost' like being outside' . . . .
but are leaching chlorine compons and wierd ass hormone inhibitors and shit that we have no idea about . . .
-this past summer - i bought a ton of pvc and built and re-built a few shapes out of it - (and learned a lot) - and i think "space age polymers" are amazing - but if they are truly "space age" - then maybe the place for them is in space -
if i had spent this summer growing bamboo instead of buying pvc - id have made a much better 'investment'

Yeah, I got that.......I'm concerned about that, as well.....especially due to the fact that I am occupationally exposed to a lot of nasty stuff.

Everything pollutes....well, not everything.......but we are all consuming and participating in the rearrangement of molecules for our own purposes......with largely not understood consequences.

I stand for a world where we manufacture eveything in the most environmentally sound ways........build everything to last.

Have you guy's seen those Temcor domes? That is a great idea......built to last a 1000 years.

...and did you cut a bunch of little triangular pieces and seam it all to gether or long strips, or what?

Sorry it took me so long to respond to this! Yes, we removed the cover after making it and after using it at the Burn. The bonded and taped seams held together very well. The cover came off much easier than it went on. I built the cover by making big triangles. Basically, the dome calculator on the Desert Domes website shows what I call a great triangle.......and it is the triangular shape bound, on the corners, by the 5 way intersections. I made a pattern out of clear polyethylene sheet.......cut a relief cut to create the compound curve......and allowed for a generous overlap for bonding. Planning for maximum yield from the rolls of shrink was challenging and we just barely had enough......I was not wanting to have to buy another roll. There are much more details to how it all went together. Write to me at my personal tribe profile and we can figure out having a phone conversation......I'm happy to share my experience, etc.

I have not checked this tribe for quite a while.......sorry for taking so long to respond. I just looked for the price list they gave me and couldn't find it. If I remember correctly, the 12 mil stuff in a 24 X 60 ft. piece is about $185-190 and the rolls of the special proprietary tape are $20 a roll. They are in San Diego www.hippwrap.com

                Happy building!

I just found one of my reciepts. The rolls come in 26 X 62 feet for the 12 mil stuff.......same approximate price at $185-190. The rolls of tape are $12.50 each for 4" X 180 feet. We spent less than $500 for enough to cover the 31 foot diameter dome......and if I remember correctly, we used a partial roll (about 1/2) and 2 full rolls. Their phone number is 858-541-2960. Ask for Liz.
